A great alternative to more ‘stuff’ and for those tricky to buy for folk, why not consider giving the gift of a creative experience and a new skill? We’ve chosen three options that would make a fantastic, unusual Christmas present - and give someone you love the opportunity to learn new skills from professional artists in a fun setting. All the options featured can provide a gift voucher in either paper or email form for your intended recipient. Read on for more details…
1. HANDS-ON POTTERY LESSONS
Give yourself or a loved one the gift of hands-on pottery lessons with local ceramicist Jorge Mata at S.K.U.L.P.T. Studios, right here on Portishead High St. Jorge is skilled in both functional pottery and creating more artistic pieces, so give him a call to discuss what you’d like and he can tailor a session or lessons to your requirements. 2. GEL PLATE PRINTING WORKSHOPS FOR BEGINNERS
Kate Birnie and Anna Young from Portishead Studios run fantastic workshops aimed at introducing monotype printing techniques. You'll learn how to make layered monoprints using a gel plate and acrylic paints; skills that can be taken away and replicated at home. Monoprinting is a fantastic and fun way to discover and explore your creativity and Kate and Anna provide expert creative guidance in a relaxed, fun and accessible environment. Your giftee will go home with a stack of greetings cards, gift tags and printed papers they created themselves! The ladies also run a range of festive and themed evenings throughout the year (a glass of gin or Prosecco, anyone?!) And can provide afternoons or evenings of printing as a great party alternative.
A fun, creative opportunity to try lino printing or wire sculpture. Artist Barbara Ash offers a range of short taster introductory sessions covering how linocut art prints are made, by designing and hand printing cards/prints. An award- sculptor herself, she also offers sessions in exploring 3 dimensional making using a range of materials. Barbara offers courses in Bristol, but she also offers the opportunity to book a small creative session in her ‘floating studio’ - a house boat moored in Portishead Marina! Surely that’s a gift with some wow factor!
