HAND-WOVEN TEXTILES BY ALYSON MATTHEWS
I live and weave in North Somerset having moved here from Birmingham.

I design and hand weave textiles from natural fibres in a range of weights, crafting scarves, shawls, blankets and bags .

I have 2 main looms, an 8 shaft table loom and a 16 shaft floor loom.I also have smaller looms which I use for demonstration and teaching purposes.
My adventure as a weaver began whilst at the Birmingham Institute for Art and Design, where I went in 2000 to study Textile Design with my focus being on Embroidery. As part of the course I was introduced to weaving and my love affair began. Embroidery was sidelined! The discipline, mathematics and order of weaving suited my personality and I graduated with a BA (Hons) 2.1.

I have the propensity to design with a “what if” thought process; commencing with a given structure and exploring what might happen if I change an element, whether that be the fibre, colour mix or more often the lift sequence.

I also teach weaving to young and old and demonstrate at local craft organisations and fairs.
