THANK YOU to everyone who visited and took part in FIELD, together we created something amazing! So what’s next?
Even though the physical event of the installation in the Folk Hall is over, Artist Hamish Young considers the individual shells of the sculpture FIELD to still be a part of the whole, wherever they may be.
We invite you to come together, and share the story of your shells; your experiences of and feelings about visiting the installation and choosing a shell; the memories and feelings it may have evoked; the acts - creative or destructive - it may have inspired.
We also invite you to share the location of your shell. Perhaps you’d like to tell us why it is where it is; did you give it away? Did you leave it for someone else to find? We would love to hear your stories.
Please use the comments section on this post to share your thoughts, and interact with others.
if you would prefer to connect in another way, we have more ways to do so here: https://www.portisheadartsfestival.org/field-art-installation.html

The Wells Cathedral Field
Another Field sculpture, recently installed in Wells Cathedral in 2023 as part of the Wells Art Contemporary exhibition, consists of over two thousand cast paper shells arranges in a circle on polished black porcelain. It had resided in two different locations whilst in the Cathedral, due to (like the previous Wells Cathedral work) to uninvited removal of shells from the work. The forced change of location of the work touches upon the inherent notions of home in the Field works (earthly, universal and spiritual).

Hamish Young is well known for cultivating his art practice such that it sits neither under one label nor another. His works are both drawing and sculpture; somehow both two- and three- dimensional. They are nomadic in a way that reflects the subject of Hamish’s work: that of being an adoptee and unwilling school boarder, being removed from one place and put in another; residing permanently in no place.
As part of the body of work that is FIELD, Hamish created several works which he considers to be ‘working drawings’. These pieces illustrate this concept perfectly.

THE FOLK HALL, 95 HIGH STREET, PORTISHEAD, BS20 6PR.
FIELD by artist Hamish Young is a specially commissioned artwork created from 27,000 hand-cast plaster shells, moulded from shells collected from around the south west coastline. In this work, each shell represents a local resident - each of the 27,000 people who call Portishead ‘home’.
The installation will be housed in The Folk Hall, an accessible community space in the heart of Portishead High Street.
Hamish and ArtPort invite everyone to come together and be a part of this organic art installation. Whether you live in Portishead, or are visiting our wonderful festival, there is a shell for you to choose and take away with you to a different place, a new home. The gradual erosion of the sculpture field will be documented in a time-lapse film and you will become a part of the story.
