Simon McCouaig is a highly respected, completely self-taught artist. Favouring portraiture as his subject, Simon's paintings are an object lesson in precision, effortlessly capturing that essence of his subject to create a truly stunning likeness. In his distinctive and vibrant signature style, Simon creates contemporary portraits that are alive with colour.
Simon is also renowned for his military artwork. An ex ‘Gloster’ man, Simon is an expert in depicting both modern and historical military themes in exquisite and accurate detail, bringing to life the past and the present seemingly effortlessly. His commissioned works are in museums, military messes and homes all over the world and he has won many prizes and awards in national exhibitions. Simon has completed many painting commissions for servicemen and their families all over the world. As a military man himself, he is able to bring that unique insight into military life to his clients’ commissions. Whether it’s people, horses, dogs or a pewter hip flask, Simon has made a painting or drawing of it or on it! A star of modern military illustration, he has also illustrated several volumes for Osprey Publishing's renowned series of military publications. In 2023 Simon was Artist in Residence at The Soldiers of Gloucester Museum, which held a six-week solo exhibition of his works. Simon works to commission; a selection of his work will be exhibited at the Beacon Hub during the festival and Simon will be on hand to discuss his work and any commission you might have in mind. |
