TEÄN KIRBY | TEÖNA POTTERY CERAMIC ARTIST
Teän Kirby is a ceramic artist based in Portishead; her work is strongly influenced by the coastal and woodland surroundings of her home and studio base. Her ceramic pieces are decorative and sculptural ranging in size from those suitable for a small window sill to large garden sculptures.
Most of Teän's inspiration is drawn from the natural world, in particular: birds, rocks, wave formations, fish and the night sky. Often, she will combine two natural elements, which can clearly be seen in sculptural pieces such as "Waverider" and "Pebble Birds"; are these the choppy waves often seen off Battery Point, or could they be fish jumping? Are those balanced pebbles or birds?

Teän enjoys the challenges of working in 3 dimensions and the simplification and abstraction of form. Many years of making ceramics have given her a wide knowledge of techniques and a deep appreciation of the immediacy and malleability of clay, truly one of our most ancient art and work materials.
